More DJ Techniques on the reactable
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper describes a project started for implementing DJ scratching techniques on the reactable. By interacting with objects representing scratch patterns commonly performed on the turntable and the crossfader, the musician can play with the DJ techniques and manipulate how they are executed in a performance. This is a novel approach to the digital DJ applications and hardware. Two expert musicians practised and performed on the reactable in order to both evaluate the playability and improve the design of the DJ techniques.

Combining DJ Scratching, tangible Interfaces and a Physics-Based Model of friction sounds
This paper reports on two Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSM) in the ConGAS European Cost Action. Several sound models and (musical instrument) interfaces were combined to study how DJ gestures of scratching can be applied to new situations. In one experiment, the gestures were used to control a physics-based model of friction sounds, for instance to simulate the sound of a bowed violin strin...
متن کاملThe acoustics and performance of DJ scratching. Analysis and modelling
This thesis focuses on the analysis and modeling of scratching, in other words, the DJ (disk jockey) practice of using the turntable as a musical instrument. There has been experimental use of turntables as musical instruments since their invention, but the use is now mainly ascribed to the musical genre hip-hop and the playing style known as scratching. Scratching has developed to become a ski...
متن کاملBeatJockey: A New Tool for Enhancing DJ Skills
We present BeatJockey, a prototype interface which makes use of Audio Mosaicing (AM), beat-tracking and machine learning techniques, for supporting Diskjockeys (DJs) by proposing them new ways of interaction with the songs on the DJ’s playlist. This prototype introduces a new paradigm to DJing in which the user has the capability to mix songs interacting with beat-units that accompany the DJ’s ...
متن کاملSonigraphical Instruments: From FMOL to the reacTable*
This paper first introduces two previous software-based music instruments designed by the author, and analyses the crucial importance of the visual feedback introduced by their interfaces. A quick taxonomy and analysis of the visual components in current trends of interactive music software is then proposed, before introducing the reacTable*, a new project that is currently under development. T...
متن کاملDeveloping Block-Movement, Physical-Model Based Objects for the Reactable
This paper reports on a Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) sponsored by the Sonic Interaction Design (SID) European COST Action IC601. Prototypes of objects for the novel instrument Reactable were developed, with the goal of studying sonification of movements on this platform using physical models. A physical model of frictional interactions between rubbed dry surfaces was used as an audio ge...
